This site was made the old-fashioned way, by hand-coding in a very nice Notepad replacement simply called Notepad2. I tend to want to conform to established HTML standards in order to provide the best possible cross-browser experience and graceful degradation. This site was written in standards-compliant HTML 4.01 for a long time, then got converted to XHTML 1.1 and has now (mostly, I hope!) been brought into compliance with HTML5. It's been a while since I tested it in a text-only browser, but when I did it worked perfectly, and the structure of the site should not have changed appreciably since.
I use CSS sparingly and you would probably have to dig out a very old browser indeed to find incompatibilities. I enjoy CSS because it gives back a bit more control to me as the author. Also, it separates content from presentation, and I very much prefer not having to spend much time on the latter, so I can concentrate on the former. You will not find snazzy graphics here. A picture speaks a thousand words, they say, and thus I don't feel it is necessary to create an image file just to express 0.1% of that. A good old-fashioned text link works just as well. In fact, the physical structure of my site has not changed since early 2007, and the colors etc. only very subtly since then.
